This is a strenuous athletic event - probably the world's most competitive recreational event - where competitors swim 2.4 miles through open water in the Pacific Ocean off Hawaii. It's the grandfather of open-water swimming, and one of the best venues in the world. This event is the basis for the swimming leg of the Ironman Triathlon.
