Yassai Hossai Fire Festival

Yassai Hossai Fire Festival
Sakai, Japan
Mid December
Description
Unlike many of Japan's fire festivals which are held in honor of mountain gods, Yassai Hossai is dedicated to the worship of Ebisu, a god of the sea.

It is said that a native fisherman burned 108 logs one night to warm the god Ebisu when he drifted in to the beach--this celebration, and the name yassai, derived from the Japanese word meaning 108, are in celebration of this event.
