Yassai Hossai Fire FestivalSakai, Japan
Mid December
DescriptionUnlike many of Japan's fire festivals which are held in honor of mountain gods,
Yassai Hossai is dedicated to the worship of
Ebisu, a god of the sea.
It is said that a native fisherman burned 108 logs one night to warm the god Ebisu when he drifted in to the beach--this celebration, and the name yassai, derived from the Japanese word meaning 108, are in celebration of this event.
