Jump Into JAZZFlint, Michigan, USA
2/25/2010 - 2/27/2010
DescriptionStudent musicians from all over the nation will have the opportunity to hone their performing skills and showcase their talents at the Mott Community College (MCC) Music Department’s - Fifth Annual Jazz Festival. The normal daylong festival was developed in its early years as a festival for community colleges, small colleges and high schools from all over the Great Lakes State, as well as the award winning MCC Jazz Combos and Jazz Ensemble. For 2010 we are continuing with its international award winning line-up and opening its doors to also include invitations to tour operators and performance groups for students across the nation.
Day 1 will be an arrival day at local hotels from 3-6 PM with an Internationally performed concert. Day 2 it will start at 8 AM and continue on through 4 PM with a dinner in the evening about 6 PM. This day will consist of 30-minute performances evaluated by educators, and award winning jazz musicians (Juno Awards/ Canadian). Guest artists and clinician/adjudicators for the event will include internationally acclaimed trombonist/composer Dave McMurdo and trumpeter/composer Mike Malone. Both McMurdo and Malone are on the music faculty at MCC’s sister college, Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario and are both multiple Juno award winners (the Juno is the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy). Mr. McMurdo and Mr. Malone have performed throughout the United States and Canada as well as Mexico, the former Soviet Union and Thailand. The festival provides students with a performance opportunity that is followed by comments and individualized clinic by both of the guest artists. Also while others are performing, there is an improvisation workshop that will be given for students to perfect their improvisational skills. We are also going to have the Flint Cultural Center open for the families to visit while the students are performing and attending the workshop. That evening we will have a gala dinner with a grand concert performance for the students and their families.
Day 3 will start the day with breakfasts at your hotel of choice and then off to the GM Assembly Plant for an educational tour and then back to the auditorium for a public performance and their citations.
