DescriptionCentral Brooklyn Jazz Consortiums grass roots celebration of an American original art form (during Jazz Appreciation Month) pays homage to icons of Jazz who called Brooklyn home. Max Roach, Eubie Blake, Betty Carter, Cal Massey, Lena Horne, Herbie Mann, Cecil Payne, Freddie Hubbard, and current native son Dr. Randy Weston are just a few of the musicians who refined or made their musical sound popular while living in this culturally rich borough of New York City. Youth programs and educational forums are also an integral part of this Brooklyn jazz festival as well as great Jazz.
During the 10th annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival nearly 5,000 jazz enthusiasts from Belgium, Canada, Japan, Ireland, Atlanta, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, New Jersey, Long Island and yes even Manhattan, came to and stayed in Brooklyn to be part of this community driven festival underwritten by the forty (40) plus member organizations/individuals of CBJC. Forty-three (43) concerts and programs were held in Midwood, Fort Greene, Bushwick, East New York, Crown Heights, Brooklyn Heights, Clinton Hill, and Bedford-Stuyvesant sections of Brooklyn in April 2009.
