One of Europe’s major classical music festivals, the International Festival of Flanders brings 550 concerts to the area. The Ghent festival presents 150 concerts and draws 44,000 visitors to hear classical music and traditional world music. 2008 celebrated the 50th anniversary of the festival. For 2009 the Festival of Flanders Ghent chose 'La Gioia' as its theme... Richard Wagner was convinced that “joy is not in things—it is in us.” In difficult times there needs to be room for the occasional smile, a warm feeling, and the odd unforgettable moment. With its main “La Gioia” theme, Flanders Festival Ghent 2009 returns to the very essence of music making: the cheerfulness and joy it brings. Good humour and music will be combined in over 180 musical events between 12 September and 5 October, both in Ghent and East-Flanders province. As you have come to expect from Flanders Festival Ghent, we have invited the best and finest. There will be a multitude of creative moments: concerts on and alongside the canals, wine tasting to music for connoisseurs, bicycling from one concert to the next, famous DJs that will spin classical music at the Festival café…?We are immensely proud of our Festival and convinced that this year’s edition will spark yet another bonfire of unforgettable moments!
