Down Home Psaltery and Hammered Dulcimer Festival

Down Home Psaltery and Hammered Dulcimer Festival
McCalla, Alabama, USA
6/11/2010 - 6/12/2010
Description
The Down Home Psaltery and Hammered Dulcimer Festival is hosted each year on the second weekend of June at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park by Paulette Lucas. As far as we are aware, this festival is the only existing psaltery festival of its kind in the U.S. The festival was born out of Paulette’s desire for psaltery players to have an opportunity to share their knowledge and different techniques with each other and to demonstrate to others just how easy the psaltery is to play. The festival started in 1996 and has grown steadily each year. Last year’s festival had a record number of over 100+ psaltery players and hammered dulcimer players plus additional interested persons attending. The festival is designed to provide workshops on the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. A Showcase is one of the many highlights of the festival and demonstrates the variety of music that can be played from classical, to country, to gospel and everything in between. The June 2003 Down Home Psaltery Festival featured the 1st Annual National Down Home Psaltery Players Juried Competition. Competitors were judged by a panel of judges with backgrounds in various fields of music. First, second and third place awards were be given. The 2003 First Place National Psaltery Competition winner was Ms. Mollie Bowles. For additional information regarding the competition rules, registration and fees, please contact Paulette Lucas. No fee is required for participation in the regular festival activities. Tannehill has three nice campgrounds available for those who wish to stay over. Absolutely no outside vendors will be allow to sale items at this festival at the request of our current and past participants.
